How DSP Work with GPs to Develop New Primary Care Premises

DSP helps GPs build new premises by:

Developing the Idea.

GPs are at the heart of the Primary Care-led NHS and are encouraged to develop new services yet many do not have the time, confidence or experience to manage a major building project for a new surgery.

DSP has been involved in more than 70 new surgery projects over the last 10 years, helping doctors to build the premises they need to improve services to their patients.

We work with practices to think through the services that will meet their patients' needs, then work with the GPs and their teams to design the right buildings and facilities to deliver those services and meet the PCT/Health Authority's requirements.

New premises will allow GPs and their staff to work in much better working environment improving their own job satisfaction as well as helping recruitment and retention.

Working out the Cost

We help GPs to understand the full financial implications of a new or expanded surgery development. We run a financial feasibility study to identify all the costs. We calculate the cash practices can safely afford to borrow, and any money they are willing to invest.

We negotiate with the PCT/Health Authority over the size of improvement grants and other financial support that may be available.

The end result is a comprehensive, fully costed financial appraisal together with recommendations.

Putting the Team Together

Developing a new primary care facility is a complex and time-consuming process. We co-ordinate everything from helping the practice to select the professional team and finding the site to arranging the move to the new premises.

We can advise GPs when and how to put together their design team of architects, surveyors and engineers and help you select the right firms at the right price. We can also recommend professionals such as lawyers, with experience in this field. We can then orchestrate the whole development process to the practice's instructions.

Securing The Approvals

We know what PCT/Health Authorities want from GP practices and we can show how the local primary care development plans will benefit from the practice's proposed development

We can prepare a practice development plan for the practice and help the PCT/Health Authority prepare their business case for the project.

We will accompany practice staff to meetings with their PCT/Health Authority to ensure all parties are satisfied with the proposed development and that value for money can be demonstrated.
